Blogging Basics: How Many Blogs Are There on the Internet? What is a Blog?
Blogging is probably one of the most popular medium of providing fresh and fast information on the web. Almost every posts shared on leading social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, StumbleUpon, Digg, and many others were taken from a blog. As of the date of this post, Blogpulse‘s statistics shows that there are a total 153,205,413 identified blogs on the internet. In the last 24 hours alone, 47,719 were created and it is growing on a daily basis. Perhaps this is not enough to cater the demand of 1.73 billion – Internet users worldwide (September 2009 data by Internet World Stats). I hope this blog of mine, Blogging for Networking, is included in the statistics although, this is my first written article published on this blog.
What is a Blog?
This is really a very basic question but it needs to be spelled out. A “Blog” is a shortcut or common name for”weblog,” which is a technical term used to describe websites that maintain and publish a chronological information be it news, photos, videos, dairy, politics, sports, hobby or almost any other subjects. It is maintained by a “blogger” like myself, who regularly write and publish contents.
Blogs focus ideally on a particular topic, called a “niche.” Examples are recipes, hobbies, technology, web design, sports, celebrities, gadgets, etc. Others create blogs for personal journals for people who want to share their daily activities, life, or thoughts, publicly or on a restricted private access.
